LCVSD Local Environmental Issues of Concern

Toxins & Environmental Justice

Public health is at risk in areas of the County where zoning allows polluting industries to be located next door to neighborhoods, schools and parks. This is an environmental justice issue as these communities are primarily made up of people of color and almost half have household incomes of less than $10,000. The industries pump 3 million pounds of toxic chemicals onsite and discharge pollutants into San Diego Bay causing its sediments to be ranked the second most toxic in the country.

California must ensure that community members, workers, and environmental resources are protected from toxic contamination.

Potential Solutions

  • Support community monitoring programs to identify toxics.
  • Work with elected officials to:
    • Strengthen local rules which allow for the emission of toxics in our community.
    • Relocate hazardous industries to industrial zones.
    • Require the abatement of lead hazards in homes.
