Executive Board Members

Gabriel Solmer Biography

Gabriel Solmer, joined the Board in 2011. Gabriel grew up in northern California.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, both from the University of California, San Diego. She earned her law degree at the University of San Diego, and joined the California Bar in December, 2003.

During law school, Gabriel interned with the United States Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division; the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California; and Coastkeeper's Environmental Law and Policy Clinic. As President of her school’s Environmental Law Society she brought recycling containers to campus and hosted several lectures and panels to introduce students to the wider world of environmental law.

For eight years, Gabriel served as Legal Director for San Diego Coastkeeper, an environmental nonprofit focused on water quality.  She led the Urban Runoff, Sewage, and Toxic Waterways campaigns, seeking to prevent pollution at its source and remediate hot spots where they occur; and ran Coastkeeper’s Water Supply campaign, advocating for San Diego’s coastal desert residents to reduce, reuse, and recycle water.  Gabriel also directed the Environmental Law & Policy Clinic, Coastkeeper's independent legal intern program.

Gabriel now serves as San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez’s Council Representative focusing on environmental and land use policy.

Gabriel’s motivation to ‘save the world’ became a lot more defined with the birth of twin boys in 2009.  When she’s not working, she can be found weeding her xeriscaped front yard with ‘help’ from the boys, her very patient husband, and Labrador retriever.  She is one of San Diego Magazine's Women Who Move the City, 2011 honorees.
